Below is a letter from Bill Watterson to a fan soon after he angered pretty much every newspaper in American by demanding a half page to himself:

Watterson was/is kind of a jerk. Not necessarily because of this action, but just in general. It’s hard to reconcile the creator of “Calvin & Hobbes”, which had so many philosophical insights, with dickdom, but there it is. If you read his (rare) interviews, it comes out.

Never got to meet him, and I haven’t run across many interviews, but you have to admire his uncompromising devotion to the art form. Plus from a purely cartoonist standpoint, it’s one of the best strips ever done IMHO.
