Addams Family Musical Not What You Think

Chicago-Tribune-Addams-Family.jpg

Nice article in the Trib today about the new Addams Family show previewing here in Chicago before heading to Broadway.

I’m heartened to hear that the show is based primarily on the actual cartoons instead of the TV show or movies:

Once the decision was made to focus only on the drawings, “The Addams Family” gained a crucial advantage over most other musicals. The source material is just those 150 Addams drawings, all based on the premise of a family of creeps who happen to love each other very much. One typical example features Gomez and Morticia sitting by the fire in their gothic castle. “Are you unhappy, darling?” asks Gomez, in the two-line caption. “Oh yes, yes! Completely! ” answers Morticia. Another features the loving pair, accompanied by their children Pugsley and Wednesday, all staring out happily together at a view of a graveyard.

But the cartoons didn’t form a continuous narrative. They were just cartoons. And thus the show is not stuck trying to stage an existing story — an encumbrance that has torpedoed many recent Broadway musicals from “Cry Baby “ to “Nine to Five. ” Within the parameters of these characters and Addams’ basic mise-en-scene, the show can do its own thing.

Here’s a short video from the local news while we’re at it:

The Mrs. and I have had our tickets for a good while. Can’t wait to go see this!

2009 Success in Comics Seminar

TUSCANY 4.jpg

Just finishing up here at the first annual Success in Comics Seminar hosted by the good folks (and seriously, I’m not sure I’ve met nicer folks) at Tundra .

I’ve mostly been concentrating on making sure my presentation went well and listening to everyone else, so if you want a good in-depth look at each speaker, check out the Daily Cartoonist.

Everyone has been great so far (still two presentations to go as I write this), and so many nice folks were good enough to come, and the Tundra organization has been so, well, organized, that I think you can call this an unqualified success.

I know I’ve gotten tons of really really good ideas (none of which I will share here), and I’m just so energized now. I can’t wait to get back home and dig in.

Anyway, a huuuuuge thanks to Chad, Bill, Karen, Mark, Zack and a few other folks I know I’m forgetting for putting together a unique, fun, educational experience like I’ve not seen before. Assuming this happens again next year, you want to be here next time.

Longbox1

That’s a shot of Longbox, “a digital comics platform similar to iTunes.”

Described as “a digital comics platform similar to iTunes,” the software will offer downloadable digital versions of comics by publishers Boom! Studios and Top Cow for just 99 cents (Discussions are being held with other publishers to add their lines).

If this is half as cool as it looks, I’m in!

Childish Superpowers

BabycapRan across Samuel Arbesman’s “What to do if your child has superpowers - A FAQ for concerned parents” the other day and thought it was a hoot:
An excerpt:

Q. My child can control the weather and summon tornadoes at a moment’s notice. This makes discipline a challenge.

A. Discipline of a super-powered child is a complex issue. First, try to explore the limits of his or her powers, and use some common sense. Can your child control magnetic fields from across a room? If so, place all knives in the attic. Has your toddler ever ensnared you in spider-webbing that can only be removed with great effort? Explain (sternly) that superpowers are a “sometimes” behavior.

Hee-hee!

So Tiny Titans’ Art Baltazar lives like right by me. I found out in a Trib article on him.

Gotta drop him a line and say hello.

Cartoonists I Admire - Clay Bennett

Cartoons 03

One of the things I love most about Clay Bennett is how deceptively simple his cartoons are. I think another editorial cartoonist would have beaten you over the head with gaudy art and lazy labels, but Bennett is beautifully, quietly devastating, and you just have to admire that.

Global Positioning Simpson

ThehomerThis via NPR:

TomTom has just released a download that makes their GPS devices sound like the ever-popular patriarch of The Simpsons TV show. The company is charging $12.95 in the United States for the opportunity to hear Homer say "woo-hoo!" from inside its little black boxes.

You can hear it here!

I don’t think I’ll be downloading this, but it’s a really fun idea!
